Let’s be honest—there’s a lot of pressure on women to look ageless. We’re sold miracle products and told that with the right technique or tool, we can erase the signs of time. But here’s the truth: real beauty isn’t about turning back the clock—it’s about feeling like yourself again. That’s why I’m excited to share these real-life makeup tips for women over 40—because what matters most is doing what feels good and right to you.

Yes, I mention age here because it helps other women find this post—but my personal motto is simple: age is just a number. What matters most is doing what feels good and right to you.

So how do we embrace the beauty of our smile and feel our best—without a makeup artist by our side? How do we keep that glow we love… and still look like us?

Why I Wanted This Conversation

When I booked a brand photoshoot, I knew I wanted to feel like me—not overly done up or hiding behind trends.

I usually wear natural makeup with a hint of glow, but for the photoshoot, I wanted to look and feel my best in front of the camera—so I asked a pro to do my makeup. Monika (makeup artist) and Laura (photographer) made the whole experience feel easy. We laughed, we played, and we talked about what beauty really means—especially when we’re no longer trying to prove anything.

While applying my makeup, Monika and I had an honest conversation about what makeup can and can’t do. Why glow doesn’t always work on camera and how one-size-fits-all beauty advice often misses the mark. And most importantly, how makeup, when used with intention, can feel like a small act of joy—not a mask.

Because our conversation touched on so much more than products or trends, I invited Monika to share her wisdom here—with real tips for creating a fresh, natural look, and reflections on how to feel good in your skin, no matter what.

What stood out to me most? Many of her makeup tips for women over 40 come back to consistency, mindset, and honoring what works for your unique skin—not your age. These simple strategies can help you feel more refreshed and confident—without needing a total overhaul.

Makeup Tips for Women Over 40: Meet Monika, Pro Stylist

Monika is a professional makeup artist based near Zurich who works with a diverse range of clients across Switzerland. In this interview, she shares her real-world experience and favorite tips for women over 40 looking to feel fresh and radiant—not masked or made over.

What kind of work do you do?

I specialize in makeup, hair, and styling for agencies, photo and video shoots, cosmetic companies, and private clients. I also run makeup and styling courses for professionals and individuals. No two days are the same—my work is wide-ranging and always tailored to the person in front of me.

How did you become a makeup artist?

I originally wanted to be a fashion designer, but life took a different path. I went to hotel school, worked in business as a management assistant, and took various courses along the way. Eventually, I made the leap to follow my passion. Now, I’ve found the perfect blend: beauty, fashion, and lifestyle all rolled into one.

What do you love most about your line of work?

I love the creativity, the aesthetics, and the fact that no day is ever boring. But what I truly cherish is helping women feel more confident, more self-loving, and more at ease in their skin. Makeup should be fun—it’s not about hiding but about enhancing what’s already there. And sometimes, just a little touch is enough to feel beautiful again.

Who do you enjoy working with most, and why?

I love the variety—every person brings something new. Different expectations, different energy, different beauty. That’s what keeps my work interesting and rewarding.

Monika’s Approach to Makeup For Women Over 40

What’s your approach to makeup for women 40+?

I don’t like to generalize, but most women start to notice changes in their skin and body around this age. It all starts with good nutrition, a healthy mindset, regular skincare (truly—consistency is key!), minimal sun, little alcohol, and no smoking. Makeup and styling? That’s the icing on the cake.

Makeup Tips for Women 40+

What should women 40+ focus on before applying makeup?

Start with clean, well-cared-for skin. Removing makeup thoroughly every evening is crucial.

Choose skincare that fits your skin type and that you enjoy using—whether that’s a serum, oil, or cream. It’s personal. Go with what feels good.

How do you create a fresh, natural look on mature skin?

  • Cleanse your skin

  • Use a serum or lightweight cream

  • Apply a BB or CC cream with SPF for light coverage, hydration, and protection

  • Add a little color: soft eye definition, mascara, blush or bronzer, and a fresh lip color

That’s it. Simple and glowing.

Why can “glowy” makeup go wrong in photos?

Photos are all about lighting. If you overdo the glow, it can end up looking sweaty or shiny—especially if you don’t know the lighting setup. It can also emphasize texture or fine lines.

Less is more in front of the camera.

Cream vs. powder blush—what do you recommend?

It depends on skin type:

  • Dry or mature skin → Cream or hydrating textures
  • Oily or textured skin → Matte powders, no shimmer
  • Hyperpigmentation? Focus less on cheek color and more on lips or eyes to draw attention elsewhere

But again, it’s not about age—it’s about skin texture and individual features.

Blush + contour tips for different face shapes?

It’s easier to demonstrate in person, but here’s the basic rule:

  • Dark tones make areas recede
  • Light tones bring features forward

So skip light shadows on hooded lids, and always highlight your cheekbones with a touch of blush or bronzer—it adds life and radiance.

Bonus Makeup Tips for Women Over 40 from Monika

Monika shares some final thoughts, product favorites, and inspiration for trying something new—your way.

Is there one look or habit you think women should feel free to ditch?

I’m really not a big fan of those huge fake-permanent eyelashes. And in general, that kind of heavy foundation combined with too much powder and overdone contouring—it just doesn’t feel fresh or flattering.

Are there any beauty creators or tutorials you recommend for real-life inspiration?

There are so many brilliant artists out there, but right now I love Victoria Beckham’s style and products—her makeup tutorials are wearable, trendy, and inspiring. If you enjoy tutorials, choose a model who has a similar face shape, skin tone, and features to your own. I’m also a big fan of Trinny London—she’s a great example of age-positive beauty with real-life application.

Just remember: tutorials by professional makeup artists often don’t reflect our everyday reality. You’ll still be sitting in front of the mirror wondering how to adapt it to your own face—and that’s completely normal.

Do you have a few go-to products you love personally or recommend often?

I use a lot of different products, but some never leave my side. I love fixing sprays like the one from Fenty Beauty to keep my makeup fresh all day. I always carry blotting papers for a quick reset and my YSL Loveshine Lipstick—it adds a touch of color and hydrates my lips.

If someone wants to feel more confident with makeup again, where should they start?

I recommend booking a personal two-hour session with a makeup artist. After that, visit your favorite beauty counters and speak with a knowledgeable sales rep. When you understand what works for your face shape, skin tone, and daily routine, shopping becomes empowering instead of overwhelming.

Final Makeup Reflections for Women Over 40 from Monika

It’s hard to explain makeup—it’s easier to show how it’s done.

Every woman has her own beauty, shaped by her life, her energy, and her experiences. That’s what shines through.

Silke’s Makeup Reflections for Women Over 40

What I love most about Monika’s approach is that it’s not about chasing trends—it’s about expressing who you are today.  Her work reminds us that beauty can be joyful, expressive, and easy.

Personally, I love popping into beauty boutiques—like Chanel Beauté in Nice or Charlotte Tilbury in London—just to try new looks, discover new products and learn from beauty experts to keep things fresh and fun. I’m also obsessed with Gucci Westman’s tutorials as I am all about clean beauty products, and while I haven’t cracked Victoria Beckham’s perfect smokey eye (yet!), I’ve learned that makeup is a lot like life: every day is a fresh canvas.

It’s not about perfection. It’s about trying something new, seeing how it feels, and having fun along the way. And while I may love a natural “no-makeup look”… let’s not talk about how many (red) lipsticks I own.

Monika’s perspective is a reminder that when it comes to makeup tips for women over 40, there’s no one-size-fits-all—only what feels right for you.

Some people say that at a certain age, you should cut your hair, wear lighter lipstick, or soften your style. But what if you already know what feels good and right to you? To me, that’s the real beauty secret—trusting your own sense of what works, not blindly following rules that don’t fit who you are today.

And while many people choose different paths—including procedures—what inspires me most are women who redefine what aging looks like. Think of Sharon Stone, Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston, Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham, or Sandra Bullock. They’re not trying to conform—they’re showing us that you can be fully yourself at any age, and that confidence, presence, and authenticity never go out of style.

The Takeaway

To bring it back to wellness—just like your skincare or morning routine—your makeup habits can evolve, too. There’s no one-size-fits-all solution, only what works for you now. If something that used to work no longer feels quite right—it’s not a sign of failure. It’s a sign that you’re growing. That you’re paying attention. That you’re ready for something that feels more you now. You don’t need a full makeover to feel refreshed.
