How to truly tune in to your body is a skill that most of us were never taught.
We’ve been trained to override, push through, and perform.
But if you’ve ever felt off, exhausted, or unsure of what your body is telling you, this post is your invitation to relearn a skill that can change everything.
The Most Important Wellness Skill You Were Never Taught
What if the most crucial wellness skill isn’t something you need to learn… but something you need to remember?
Something simple, quiet, and something that most of us—especially high-achieving women—have been taught to override.
I’m talking about how to tune in to your body.
Before you reach for another supplement, another plan, another “fix”…pause.
Because the answers you’ve been looking for might not live in the next thing you try, but in the wisdom you’ve been ignoring all along.
How to Tune In to Your Body: A Forgotten Yet Foundational Habit
We weren’t born disconnected.
As children, we knew how to listen to our bodies.
We cried when we were tired, stopped eating when we were full, and moved when we felt restless. And we said no when something didn’t feel right.
But over time, we learned to push through.
To be efficient. To do what’s expected.
We learned to override signals like hunger, fatigue, or stress because there was work to be done. A task to finish. Someone else to take care of.
One woman in my Jumpstart program said, “I don’t even feel like I have a full minute just to sit. I’m always multitasking.”
She’s not alone. So many high-achieving women believe they don’t have time to slow down, because slowing down feels like falling behind.
A coach friend of mine put it this way: “High-achievers want fast results. They don’t believe in starting small.”
But here’s what I’ve seen over and over again:
It’s not the fast, flashy changes that make the most significant difference.
It’s the simple ones. The small, consistent moments when you tune in to your body and respond.
It’s coming back to basics, if you will.
How to Tune In to Your Body (Without the Woo)
Let’s be clear: tuning in to your body isn’t mystical—it’s practical.
It’s not about perfection or some ideal morning routine.
It’s about noticing:
- How your body responds to certain foods
- When your energy drops
- What your mood is like after a conversation, a deadline, or a rushed lunch
- Whether your rest restores you, or just numbs you
A friend once asked me, “How do you even know how food makes you feel?”
And my answer was simple: “I just started paying attention.”
Not obsessively. Not tracking every gram and just noticing how something makes you feel.
That’s where the shift begins—and where tuning in to your body becomes second nature.
Real-Life Awareness Changes Everything
Recently, a coach friend of mine told me she had stopped drinking wine, not because she was trying to be “good,” but because she noticed it always made her wake up at 3 AM and then struggle to fall back asleep.
Another woman from my Jumpstart program shared that within just a few days of making minor tweaks—such as walking after lunch, focusing on eating real foods and aiming for an “ideal plate,” or simply taking a breath before reacting—she felt more energetic, had improved digestion, and slept better than she had in weeks.
This is what happens when you stop outsourcing your wellness and start checking in with yourself. It’s the direct result of learning how to tune in to your body.
Why It Feels So Hard (and Why It’s Still Worth It)
Tuning in to your body sounds simple. But when you’ve spent years pushing through, it can feel foreign—or even uncomfortable.
You might worry:
- What if I don’t like what I hear?
- What if I realize I need something I don’t know how to give myself?
- What if slowing down means I lose my edge?
But here’s what I know for sure: Your body is not the enemy. It’s not trying to sabotage you.
Your body has been communicating all along—you just haven’t been taught how to listen.
And you don’t have to overhaul your life to start. In fact, please don’t!
Start Here: A One-Minute Practice to Reconnect With Your Body
Let’s make this real. You don’t need a wellness plan, a full hour of stillness.
All you need to start tuning in to your body is one quiet minute.
One-Minute Tune-In Exercise
- Take a deep breath in. Then a deep breath out.
- Let your shoulders drop. Let your jaw soften.
- Sit comfortably. Put both feet on the ground. Let your hands rest on your lap.
- Breathe gently through your nose.
Breathe in on the count of 4, breathe out on the count of 6 through your nose.
Please close your eyes while doing this and try to focus on your breath.
If your mind wanders off, gently bring it back. Do this for about a minute, slow and steady.
Then ask yourself:
- What am I feeling—physically, mentally, emotionally?
- Is there anything I’ve been ignoring?
- What’s one small way I can support myself today?
You don’t have to fix anything. Just notice.
That’s the work. That’s the wisdom. And that’s what changes everything.
The Takeaway: You Already Have the Answers
You don’t need another expert telling you what to do. You need permission to listen to what your body’s been asking for.
Learning how to tune in to your body is not the easy way out—it’s the missing step most plans skip.
And it’s the reason so many “solutions” don’t last.
So if you’ve been trying to do it all and still feel off…
Maybe it’s time to stop doing and start noticing.
